Introduction to WHO Scalp Acupuncture (WSA)

WHO Scalp acupuncture (WSA) refers to a modern system of puncturing on the scalp. It is regarded as the most important set of acupoints to treat neurological and physiological disorders, e.g. stroke sequelae, Parkinson’s disease, depression, etc. SA originates from the meridian theories, modern anatomy and physiology of the brain, neurological findings, and biohomography. WSA developed from Jiao’s scalp acupuncture system established by Dr. Jiao Shunfa in 1971. Then it became popular quickly, and in 1991, the WHO Proposal of Scalp Acupuncture, was published. Tens of thousands of acupuncture practitioners, researchers and patients have validated the effectiveness.

WSA has a broad spectrum of indications: brain or neurological diseases (stroke, paralysis, hemiplegia, aphasia, tinnitus, Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington disease, dementia, etc.), headache, eye diseases, ear-nose-throat diseases, pain, psychological and psychiatric diseases, and other diseases. Basically speaking, SA is primarily used for neurological and psychological disorders.

SA consists of 14 linear “acupoints” in the frontal region (4 points), vertex region (5 points), temporal region (2 points), and occipital region (3 points). Typically, in order to make the patient feel Deqi, manipulation should be made, including fast twisting, lifting and thrusting, and movement of the limbs. Electricity is a good combination for neurological disorders. Combined with conventional rehabilitation training, the needles can remain on the scalp sometimes 1-2 hours.

In the workshop, the following items will be covered

1. History and mechanism of WSA

2. Research and case examples

3. 14 linear points, hand-to-hand practice including techniques and manipulations

4. Clinical use of WSA i.e. protocol for common disorders
